Everything you need to know about dividends

When does Santander pay my dividends?

Santander generally pays dividends four times a year. These are usually paid in February, May, August and November. Traditionally, Santander has paid standard cash dividends, but in recent years has offered its shareholders the Santander Scrip Dividend Scheme for certain payments.

What is the difference between standard dividends and the Scrip Dividend Scheme?

A standard dividend payment is a fixed amount of cash paid for each share that you hold. A history of past standard dividends can be found here

Scrip dividends replace the standard cash dividend and offer shareholders the opportunity to choose to receive a cash amount, or alternatively, to receive new Santander shares. Scrip dividends are approved by shareholders at the Annual General Meeting and we will notify shareholders in advance of a scrip dividend being offered. Further information can be found here.

When will I receive my standard dividend payment?

Santander's record date for standard dividend payments is on the last working day before the dividend payment date (which is generally made by Santander in Spain on the 1st of the month in which the dividend is paid). This is different to most UK companies, where the record date is usually two weeks before the payment date. Your dividend will be paid approximately 10 days later if you receive your dividend directly into your bank account. If your dividend is paid by cheque, you will receive the payment about three weeks after the dividend date.

Under the terms and conditions of the nominee service, provision is given for distributions to be paid as soon as reasonably practicable after receipt by our Registrars, of the dividend funds. The dividend payment date in Spain is generally on the 1st of the month in which the dividend is paid. The money then has to be transferred to the UK and converted from euro to sterling.

There is no specific timescale set out for the distribution of payments, as a number of factors affect both the calculation and distribution of the payments.  It is only once these funds are received and reconciled against the details of all shareholders in the nominee services that actual individual dividend payments are allocated and then distributed.

When will I receive my Scrip Dividend payment?

The date for receiving your Scrip Dividend distribution may differ from a standard dividend payment and a timetable can be found here
