Santander named the World's Best Bank by The Banker magazine

Madrid, Dec. 4, 2009 – The prestigious magazine The Banker has named Banco Santander the 'Global Bank of the Year', noting that "Without doubt, the international bank that has come through the crisis the best – and taken advantage of the opportunities that have arisen from it – is Santander. The bank has managed to come up with a winning formula that combines an aggressive sales strategy with solid risk management and tight cost control. In essence, it is a very basic approach to banking but, as has been shown from the crisis, many banks have been unable to emulate it,” according to the magazine's editor, Brian Caplen.

The magazine also named Santander Bank of the Year in Western Europe and Bank of the Year in Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal and Puerto Rico.

Banco Santander Chairman Emilio Botin said: 'This award from the The Banker is an important acknowledgement of the bank’s business model and strategy. Now our challenge is to continue being the best bank in the world for our customers, employees and shareholders. We will strive to do it just as we have done for over a century and a half: with hard work, determination and ethics'.
